On Christmas Day 5 we remember Simeon. Simeon was a righteous man who was waiting for the consolation of Israel. Luke tells us that "the Holy Spirit was on him." He recognized the fulfillment of a promise that God had given him. He would see the Messiah. When Simeon takes Jesus in his arms, it reminds me of the moment when Elizabeth greets Mary and the child leaps within her womb. Those who are watching and listening for the Lord, see him and hear him.
Simeon praises the Lord and offers a song, long known by its Latin name, Nunc Dimittis.
"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."
After praising God, Simeon looks right at Mary and says:
"This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too."
God's prophet had a hard word for Mary. Yes, Jesus would be great, but she would experience suffering as a result of her love for him. Throughout her life, Mary has the opportunity to continue to say, "Be it unto me according your will." She is walking by faith through obedience, but her heart will be broken.

Margie,
As I read these insights regarding Mary and how her heart was pierced by the full consequences of her saying "Yes" to being the Mother of our Lord and the resulting bond of love that would endure great anguish in her son's life later, I see you, Margie, also embracing God's will for you and John to be together, create the beautiful family and loving community so wonderfully described in your blog, and now to go through your own heart's piercing as you walk in faith through this "valley of the shadow of death". But, oh the "table that is prepared before you in the presence of such enemies" as potential loss, trials and hardships you endure in this incredible journey both you and John are taking! Margie, please know that the Presence of God and his Character and Truth shine through you as much as John in this amazing journey you chronicle here in your blog. You are not only an "abiding branch" in the Vine that is bearing much fruit, you are chronicling for all of us who read it both an inspiration and great insight into how we can do so ourselves. God bless you and John and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers so often.
